In Frederiksberg Municipality, damp textile waste can’t be recycled. Many citizens don’t bag their textiles or know how to sort them properly. This project proposes two solutions: A short-term fix with better signage and a bag dispenser at the bin. A long-term solution with an automatic bagging system to prevent contamination. Both aim to make textile disposal easier, clearer, and more effective for recycling.

the bin system
We visited the municipality in Frederiksberg to understand the current textile waste system and spoke with local residents about their disposal habits. Many were unclear on the guidelines or unaware of the system altogether. As one person said, “There’s so much trash bins, to be honest I don’t look at it too much.” Another noted, “It’s just common sense to knot the bag and keep it dry, but not everyone knows that.” These insights highlighted a need for clearer communication and more user-friendly solutions.
testing with users
We conducted a small workshop during the ideation phase to test both concepts with users. The session explored placement, shape, accessibility, and usability of the solutions especially focusing on user interactions with the second, more complex bagging system. Feedback helped us understand how the ideas performed in real-world contexts and guided further development.
Short term solution
The bag dispenser provides users with bags and clearly communicates the importance of sealing textile waste before disposal. It can be made from powder-coated metal or plastic, depending on budget and quantity. The existing bin and lid remain unchanged, with the dispenser permanently attached to the handle without affecting its function.
Long term solution
The long-term solution is a redesigned bin lid that includes an automatic bagging system to prevent unbagged textile waste and contamination. When the user opens the lid, a revolver unit with a continuous tube bag is revealed. After placing the waste inside, the user spins the handle to seal the bag segmenting it "like sausages." Instructions inside the lid guide proper use, and the user lid protects the system from weather.
Implementation
Short term (0–1 year)
Develop the bag dispenser
Implement clear communication on the dispenser
Long term (2–5 years)
Develop a new bin lid with integrated bagging system
Add instructional communication to the lid
